Delivery driving looks simple: accept an order, pick it up, drop it off, get paid.

But your gross earnings are not your real profit.

Miles, fuel, maintenance, taxes, waiting time, safety, and the orders you accept all affect what you take home.

1. Do Not Depend on One Delivery App

Different platforms serve different types of deliveries.

Drivers often work across categories such as:

Food Delivery: DoorDash, Uber Eats
Grocery and Retail: Instacart, Walmart Spark
Scheduled Delivery Blocks: Amazon Flex

Having access to more than one platform gives you alternatives when demand is slow.

But do not let multiple apps distract you while driving. Manage offers only when safely stopped.

2. Get the Right Equipment

A few basic tools make delivery work easier.

Consider:

Insulated delivery bags • Secure phone mount • Car charger • Power bank • Flashlight

Food temperature affects the customer experience, while a reliable phone setup keeps navigation and delivery apps available throughout your shift.

Your phone is part of your work equipment. Treat it that way.

3. Judge Orders by Miles, Not Only Dollars

A $15 delivery is not automatically better than an $8 delivery.

Look at:

Pay • Total mileage • Estimated time • Pickup location • Drop-off location • Return distance

Some gig drivers use personal minimums such as $1.50 to $2 per mile as a screening tool, but this is not a guaranteed profit formula.

The right threshold depends on your vehicle, fuel costs, market, taxes, waiting time, and operating expenses.

4. Track Every Business Mile

If you work as an independent contractor, accurate mileage records matter.

The IRS business standard mileage rate changed during 2026. It was 72.5 cents per business mile from January through June and increased to 76 cents per mile beginning July 1, 2026.  

Track business mileage consistently rather than trying to reconstruct months of driving at tax time.

Remember, the IRS mileage rate is a tax calculation rate, not a payment your delivery platform automatically gives you.

5. Learn When Your Market Gets Busy

Demand changes throughout the day.

For food delivery, lunch and dinner are obvious periods to test. Weekends, events, holidays, and poor weather can also change local demand.

Instead of assuming one schedule works everywhere, track your results.

Record:

Hours worked • Orders completed • Gross earnings • Miles driven • Waiting time

After several weeks, you will know when your market is worth working.

6. Learn Your Delivery Zone

Local knowledge saves time.

Learn where restaurants cluster, which stores have slow pickups, where parking is difficult, which apartment complexes require access codes, and which destinations leave you far from active areas.

A shorter delivery that keeps you near busy restaurants might be more useful than a higher-paying order that leaves you far outside your preferred zone.

Think beyond the current order.

7. Never Sacrifice Safety for a Delivery

No order is worth a crash.

Wear your seat belt, obey speed limits, avoid impaired or drowsy driving, and keep your attention on the road. NHTSA specifically warns that phones, navigation systems, eating, and other activities that take attention away from driving create distraction risks.  

Set navigation before moving whenever possible.

At night, use extra caution around unfamiliar addresses and parking areas. Lock your vehicle when leaving it unattended.

The customer can wait. The road cannot.

8. Build Good Relationships at Pickup Locations

Restaurant and store employees are part of your workflow.

Be polite, confirm the order clearly, and avoid blaming staff for delays outside their control.

If an order is running late, use the platform’s available tools to report or manage the delay.

Professional interactions make repeated pickups at the same locations much easier.

9. Read Delivery Instructions Early

Do not wait until you are standing outside an apartment building to learn you need a gate code.

Check available delivery instructions before reaching the destination.

Look for:

Apartment number • Building entrance • Gate code • Parking instructions • Drop-off location • Contactless delivery requests

Preparation prevents unnecessary calls, wrong-door deliveries, and wasted minutes.

Never read detailed instructions while actively driving.

10. Calculate Net Earnings, Not App Earnings

This is the number new drivers need to understand.

If your app shows $200, you did not necessarily make $200 in profit.

Account for expenses such as:

Fuel • Maintenance • Tires • Oil • Insurance • Depreciation • Taxes • Tolls • Parking

Then calculate:

Net earnings ÷ hours worked = approximate net hourly earnings

Also consider your unpaid driving and waiting time.
